Buttermilk stories:

I still remember our childhood days. Sundays are always welcome as that is the only day when we get to see our favourite cartoon programmes on TV. While watching TV, the only help that mom expected then was to shake (rather churn) the ‘horlicks’ bottle filled with milk cream to separate the butter from buttermilk!!!

In my ancestral house, I remember seeing a staff fitted in a corner. In joint families of olden days, it was a daily task to butter the milk and one of the ladies in the family did this every morning. A thick rope was used to connect the staff with the churning stick. The churning stick itself was dipped inside a big pot containing heavy milk cream to be churned. The etched side of the churning stick was dipped inside the pot. Then the rope was pulled from either side (looked like the hands were playing tug of war with each other). The ladies sang while churning the butter out of the cream. In olden days, earthen pots where used for churning. The taste of the buttermilk stored in earthen pots is incomparable, as against steel and ceramic pots used now.

All these are memories now. Well, now there are enough machines available in the market to do this job for us. Though I don’t use one now, I have preserved one of the churning sticks, passed on by my mother-in-law for nostalgic reasons.
