Tricolour Neer Dose | Tricolour Crepe

Neer Dose is quite a popular breakfast dish along the Coastal Karnataka region. It is the simplest among all the Dose. And those, who find it difficult smearing the regular dose batter over the pan (which I tell you is quite simple, but a tricky task indeed), can easily vouch for this dose.

Traditionally, this dish is prepared using soaked rice and fresh grated coconut, which requires about 2 hours of soaking time and couple of more minutes to grind the ingredients.

The recipe that I am going to share today is a quicker version of neer dose. Especially for the busy people out there, who want to have a traditional south Indian breakfast, but don’t have sufficient time for preparation.

Of course, the original has the authenticity in it, which can’t be replaced by the quicker version, but this tastes good in its own way.

Working parents, with kids who are fussy eaters, I bet, you would love this recipe, as it is “Healthy bhi aur tasty bhi”.

With the Indian Independence Day right around the corner, I just got an idea of making this recipe more colourful just to go with the theme.

We have only a few simple ingredients required here for this version of neer dose– rice flour and coconut milk, which are easily available. Cumin and carom seeds act as taste enhancers. If you want you can even grind fresh grated coconut along with rice flour and little water, instead of coconut milk.

Additionally, to flavour up for the occasion – Indian Independence Day, in a healthy way, I have used grated carrot and chopped fresh spinach leaves.

Let’s celebrate Indian Independence, the VeggiePotNPan way with Tricolour Neer Dose / Tricolour Rice crepe.

Back in Coastal Karnataka, Neer Dose is served with different spicy chutney varieties and / or sagu / Sambar. If you go to some interior parts, a very unique side dish is served along with Neer Dose – jaggery mixed fresh grated coconut. No side dish can get more simpler and yummier. This combination is my favourite. In the season of mangoes, without any doubt, Neer Dose is accompanied with Mango Rasayana (A sweet dessert prepared using ripe mangoes, coconut milk and jaggery).

Total Time : 45 minutes
Preparation Time : 15 minutes

Cooking Time : 30 minutes

Servings : 15 dose

Ingredients:

Grated carrot: 3/4th cup

Washed, cut spinach leaves: 1 cup

Rice flour: 1 cup

Coconut milk: 1 cup

Cumin seeds / Jeera: 1 tsp.

Carom seeds: 1 tsp.

Salt: taste

Water: About 4 to 5 glasses

Method:

  • Grind grated carrot and spinach leaves separately and keep aside

  • In a mixing bowl, add rice flour, coconut milk, carom seeds, cumin seeds, salt and water. Mix well. The resultant batter should be of the buttermilk consistency

  • Divide the above batter into 3 parts

  • To the first part, add ground carrot, mix well and add water. The resulting batter should be of running consistency. Neer dose batter, generally will be flowy and will not stick to the vessel or the ladle. So, that is the key to be noted while adding the water

  • To the second part, add the ground spinach, mix well and add water

  • To the third part, just add water

  • Heat a non-stick pan. If required, grease it with oil or ghee. Pour the dose batter one after the other. Unlike, the traditional urad dal dose batter, here, we don’t have to smear it in a spherical fashion. The dose batter just needs to be poured to cover the non-stick pan/tawa completely. If required, you may swirl round the pan itself to spread the batter evenly. Cover the pan with lid and let it cook in medium flame for few minutes. Once cooked, reverse the dose and cook for few more minutes

  • Once cooked on both sides, remove the dose from pan and transfer it to a serving plate

  • Repeat the same with remaining batter

  • Serve the dose with spicy coriander chutney or hot sambar or coconut jaggery mixture

Neer Dose Stories:

Neer Dose is a Coastal Karnataka delicacy which is more often than not loved by all, especially in the season of mangoes. Today’s story is one of my neer dose memories, straight from my native. For any grand celebration at home, the invitations are laid out personally by visiting friends and relatives. These days, due to lack of time, this custom is slowly being replaced by e-mails, social media invites and phone calls.

For one such occasion at home, we started from Bangalore over a weekend to our native to distribute invitations, to visit our nearest and closest relatives there. And yes, it was Summer and you guessed it right, season of mangoes!!! We started our day at our granny’s place. We had Neer dose with mango rasayana for breakfast. Along with mango rasayana, they even served the jaggery fresh grated coconut mixture in one corner, which made the breakfast even more tastier. We all had it to our heart’s content. After the invite there, we proceeded to another cousin’s house. Coincidently, they had also prepared Neer Dose with mango rasayana… On similar lines, all the houses that we visited next, had Neer dose as part of the meal / snack. So, it was literally Neer dose day for us!!!
