Capsicum Potato Yogurt Curry

No onion, no garlic, no garam masala? Sathvik  but at the same time lip smacking ,gravy recipe for roti / poori and chapathi??? Does it sound nearly impossible?!!! Trust me, it is doable, with a promise that it also tastes equally good with any of the bread types and hot rice.

This happens to be one of my favourite side dish to cook as well as eat.

But, as tasting is believing when it comes to food, why don’t you try it yourself?

Total time: 30 minutes

Preparation time: 10 minutes

Cooking time: 20 minutes

Servings: 3

Ingredients:

Peeled and diced potato: 1 cup (2 large potatoes)

Chopped capsicum: 1 cup (1 large capsicum)

Cumin seeds / Jeera: ½ tsp.

Asafoetida / Heeng: ½ tsp.

Gram flour / Besan / Kadle hudi: 1 tbsp.

Yogurt: 3 tbsp.

Water: 2 cups

Turmeric powder: 1 tsp.

Oil: For tempering

Coriander Powder: ½ tbsp.

Salt to taste

Fresh Coriander leaves (Optional): Little

Ginger: ½ inch

Green chilli: 2

Method:

  • In a deep bottomed pan, heat little oil. Once the oil is hot enough, add jeera and fry

  • Once it starts to spurt, add asafoetida, gram flour and fry in low flame till the gram flour turns aromatic / golden brown

  • Now, add green chillies and ginger

  • Add turmeric powder and mix. Now, add yogurt and mix again. To this add water and slightly stir

  • To the above, add chopped capsicum, diced potato and fresh coriander leaves one after the other and mix

  • Add coriander powder and salt and mix well

  • Cover the pan and let it cook for about 15 to 20 minutes in medium flame or until the potato is cooked well. (Potato should be crunchy, but cooked. If you feel the water has reduced in the process of cooking, you may add more till the vegetables are cooked well)

  • The curry is neither dry nor does it consist of watery gravy. Once the vegetables are cooked enough, you may remove it from heat and serve
  • Capsicum Potato Yogurt gravy goes well with roti / chapathi or even hot rice

Capsicum potato yogurt curry stories:

My mom is very religious and observes fasting, recites ‘Sahasranamas’, goes to temple, and performs pooja piously. Though she wholeheartedly follows all of these without any qualms, she has never imposed any of these on us. She never told us either about all these. We got to know certain things over a period of time as we grew up.

I don’t really follow all the customs, though I am religious, visit temple and observe festivals. It is not easy to stick on to principles and discipline in life. My mom has picked some for herself which she follows religiously. I have told myself that even if I don’t follow certain things that my mom follows, I will not question her as it might hurt her sentiments, but would rather facilitate for her practices as much as possible. So, while she is visiting me, if she is observing any of the above on specific days, I support her and ensure that she carries on with her fasting, or vrat without any hindrances. One such constraint on certain days being no onion and no garlic in food. When it comes to South Indian cooking, I am always a step behind her. So, whenever she comes home, I try to cook something different so that there is no scope for any shortcoming to be noticed!!!

This is one such dish which I prepare when she is observing her vrat. The yogurt mixed with gram flour gravy brings in the thick consistency and a little sourness. Capsicum brings in the unique flavour to the otherwise bland dish. Both my mom and mom in law love north Indian food. My dad and dad in law are just the opposite as they are happy and satisfied with the traditional south Indian meals. Surprisingly, this one dish, satisfies all the four of them 🙂
