Eggless Butter Cookies

Any given day, eggless butter cookies is a family favourite snack, for kids and adults alike. I am sure, there is atleast one container at home that contains cookies. I for one belong to this category.

Having this at home, ensures that there is always something, to passify your sweet tooth!!!

Well, this snack is not just yummy but is also easy to make and bake. And most importantly, it requires only a handful of ingredients to bring in a great taste.

Well here, I have included few add ons like ‘Hagel Zucker’ (Hail Sugar) (Christmas time!!!), jam and little salt to bring in a special taste to the butter cookies.

Hagel Zucker, as it is known in Germany, is traditionally used in baking cookies during Christmas. It is one variety of sugar, which doesn’t melt at moderately high temperatures, and so, it is ideal for topping / décor while baking.

Jim-Jam cookies have always been my favorite. Not just mine, it is my mom’s and my daughter’s favorite too. And so, I went ahead with including jam in the cookies here. And I was sure, this was gonna be a hit with the kids.

Ingredients:

All purpose flour: 3 cups

Butter: 230 grams

Sugar: 1 cup

Milk: 0.25 cup

Salt: 0.5 tsp.

Baking Powder: 1.5 tbsp.

Hagel Zucker: Little

Jam: Little

Vanilla essence: 1 tsp.

Method:

  •       In a bowl, mix the butter (at room temperature) and sugar and cream it until fluffy. Keep aside

  •       Bring in flour, baking powder and salt and whisk together

  •       Add the above to the butter sugar cream and mix everything well. The dough will not be firm as of now. Add the milk and essence and firmly knead the dough. As you press the dough, it will hold together the ingredients forming a firm but soft dough

  •       Cover the dough with a cling sheet and refrigerate for about 30 minutes
  •       Preheat the oven at 180 deg. C
  •       Take the chilled dough, pinch out a small ball and press it gently between your palms. Create a small well in the center and keep it aside. The dough should be approximately 0.25 inch thick

  •       Place the above in a lined baking tray. Drop a little amount of jam in the well created. Drop some hagel zucker at the top

  •       You can alternatively use cookie moulds and create the cookies with the shapes that you desire

  •       Repeat the above two steps until the dough is used up. Ensure that the cookies have enough place between each other in the baking tray

  •       Place the baking tray containing the cookies in the preheated oven for about 8 to 10 minutes (or until the corners of the cookies are browned)
  •       Remove the baked cookies from oven and let it cool
  •       Enjoy the freshly baked cookies with a cup of coffee in this chilling winter. You can also store these cookies in an airtight container for 2 to 3 weeks

Eggless Butter Cookies stories:

Baking has always been dear to me. Along with the cakes, my family looks forward to my home baked cookies of different kinds. Christmas time calls for a big celebration in Germany. My daughter’s kindergarten is no different. A christmas party organised there had a small performance by kids followed by a snack party. The families volunteered to bring in different eateries and beverages. Yes, and you guessed it right. This is what I baked for the party. I had baked a box full of eggless butter cookies with different shapes and yes, jam ones being the most. After the performance, it was time for the snack party. The kids, who by now were already hungry, looked into the spread and guess what? In no time, I saw them gathered in front of the cookies that I had baked. They helped themselves lavishly and in no time, the box was empty. I could see my daughter, who by now was proudly telling all her friends that these cookies were baked by her mom !!! Of course, I was super happy J So, here I am, sharing this simple recipe to win over your family’s hearts !!!
