Akki Rotti (Postpartum Recovery Meal Plan Special)

“Akki Rotti” – is one of the common breakfast items in a Kannadiga household. Sumptuous, tasty and healthy – Akki Rotti is one of our family favorite breakfast items!

As the name says, it is flat bread made using various shredded/chopped veggies bound together with rice flour. Below is a simple recipe, which is tailor made to suit the needs of lactating mothers.

Total time:  60 minutes

Preparation time: 30 minutes

Cooking time: 30 minutes

Makes: 7 average sized rottis

Ingredients:

Rice flour: 2 cups (add more if the consistency is not reached yet)

Onion: 1 (finely chopped)

Cabbage: 1 cup (finely chopped/grated)

Dill leaves: 1 bundle chopped

Carrot: 0.5 cup grated

Cumin seeds: 1 tsp.

Salt: As per taste

Baking sheets / Butter paper / Fresh plantain leaf

Method:

  • In a bowl mix everything together till a chapathi dough consistency is reached
  • Take water in a small bowl
  • Make small balls from the dough and transfer it to the greased butter paper / banana leaf / baking sheet
  • With moist fingers gently pat it flat to make the rotti. It should be neither too thin nor too thick
  • Parallelly preheat the tawa and grease it well with ghee
  • Transfer rotti to the tawa. Apply enough ghee. Cook on both sides on medium/ low heat with a lid closed
  • Once cooked, remove from the tawa and serve it hot!

Serve with chutney or other accompaniments. I personally prefer honey – butter combination with almost any kind of dose/rotti along with coconut chutney or so, as the other accompaniments. Here I have used gatti chutney (shall come up with the recipe too) here which is a very specific chutney prepared for consumption during the postpartum recovery days.

Note :

  • The above recipe can be modified as per your liking. You may include ginger, finely chopped green chillies to make the rotti spicier
  • Adding grated coconut brings in the softness and flavor to this dish. I have skipped it here to fit it into the postpartum recovery meal plan
  • You may finger punch one or two holes after patting the rotti, before transferring to the tawa. This is usually done to ensure that the rotti is cooked uniformly

Akki Rotti Stories:

I must admit, I still love it, when my mother in law prepares it. She prepares it the traditional way, by keeping two tawa and patting the rotti balls flat directly on the tawa. The method mentioned above in the recipe, is a no-fail recipe and the steps are easy which can be followed by any newbies too!

I personally like it, when it is made with plantain leaf. But, more often than not, I end up using butter paper or so!

Whichever method you choose to prepare akki rotti, it will never fail to amaze you with the outcome!
