Mango Sasmi | Mango Mustard Curry | Kukku Sasmi

Mango Sasmi

Who doesn’t love mangoes??? Be it the raw mango or the ripe one, we all love to have them in different ways – either cooked or not cooked – raw or processed.

There are quite a lot of dishes that can be made using mangoes and one such dish is Mango Sasmi / Kukku Sasmi / Mango Mustard Curry. It is a sweet, spicy and also tangy dish from the Coastal Karnataka. “Kukku” Is a word from the widely spoken Coastal Karnataka language “Tulu”, which means “Mango”. “Sasmi” in “Tulu” means “Mustard”.  Though added in a small quantity, mustard plays a very important role in bringing in the perfect taste and aroma to this authentic Coastal Karnataka recipe. More importantly, this is a “No cook” dish. And of course, a very easy one. Here we go with the recipe for the same.

Wild mango stories:

Summer Holidays!!! Native place!!!  And Wild mangoes, which we ourselves pick/pluck and eat, along with our cousins!!! Ahhh!!! Those were the best days ever… well, now, I still go to the same place during summers, to pluck and pick the mangoes, but with my little daughter, who loves eating wild mangoes. Well, mangoes are yum to taste, no doubt. We all wait for summers, just to taste the varieties of mangoes. Summers and mangoes are a great combination. And of all the varieties, wild mangoes are my favourite. Its small in size, but the taste??? Heavenly. It’s a great combination of sweetness and sourness and slurpppp, very juicy too…Though we all loved eating it raw in our childhood days, we also used to get few of them back home, for, our moms used to prepare amazing dishes out of these wild mangoes. One of them being Mango Sasmi / Kukku Sasmi as it is called in Coastal Karnataka.

Note :

  • The taste of the dish largely depends on the type/variety of mango that is used. Though, any type of ripe mangoes can be used, but tastes best with wild mangoes.
  • Seasoning : Heat a tbsp of ghee in a pan and once it is hot add mustard seeds. Once the seeds start to spurt add the curry leaves and remove from flame.
