Sweet Potato Paratha / Flat Bread

On a cold winter morning, delicious hot parathas are a delicious retreat! Of all the parathas, sweet potato parathas are among the ones, loved by adults and children alike.

Now, if you are a beginner and have never baked a paratha, I would recommend that you start with this!

It’s one of the easiest parathas, I bet!

Goes really well with the flavoury Vegetable Kurma.

Other curries that go well with sweet potato paratha are: Gassi, dal, sagu

Preparation time: 10 minutes

Cooking time: 25 minutes

Total time: 35 minutes

Serves: 15 – 20 parathas

Ingredients:

Sweet Potato: 1(large)
Wheat flour/ Chapathi atta: 2 cups
Coriander powder: 1 tsp
Jeera: 1 tsp.
Red Chilli Powder: 1 tsp.
Salt: as per taste
Ghee: for baking

Method:

  • Wash and cut the sweet potato into 2 halves. Place in a pressure cooker with little water and cook it for 1 or 2 whistles. (you can alternatively cook it in an open vessesl with water). Once cool, peel and mash them

  • In a large bowl, add flour, spices and salt, and mix well. Now, add mashed sweet potato and knead well until a smooth dough is formed. You may add wheat flour if required. But do not add water while kneading.

  • Make small balls out of it. Dust the rolling board with wheat flour and then roll the ball into a round flat bread using a rolling pin.

  • Repeat the above with the remaining dough
  • In parallel, in a preheated pan, bake the rolled flat bread (paratha) on either sides, and while doing so, brush ghee. Transfer the baked paratha onto a hot casserole, or serve it hot with some side dish like the vegetable kurma. You may also serve it with pickle or raita!

Sweet potato Paratha stories:

In our first year in Germany, during our weekend trips, I preferred carrying simple home made food, especially for my daughter, who otherwise was a picky eater. Being very fond of chapathis, rotis and parathas, this happened to be one of her favorite parathas. The best part about it is that it remains soft, tasty and filling, even when it is not hot / warm.

This dish in general gets all my ticks right, as it is very easy to prepare and is travel friendly. Not to forget a very important attribute – that it is very healthy too.

So, I prepared and packed a few of them, as sweet potato paratha rolls! And my daughter loved eating them on the go!
