Cherry Jam

With only 3 ingredients going into preparation and the satisfaction of making one at home, the Cherry Jam is not just a must try recipe in the season of berries, but one for keeps too!

We usually have one or the other kind of jams, either made from fruits or veggies, refrigerated. The ones that my daughter loves the most are the jams made from berries. This season too, Cherry Jam was a total hit with her and my family, in general!

I prefer making jams in small quantities. It is not just easier to prepare but it gets over faster too and so, I get a chance to try out something else!

Fresh pound of bread with freshly prepared jam is indeed a treat!

This jam goes well as a filling for cupcakes, toppings on cookies and so on!

Total Time: 40 minutes

Prep. Time: 20 minutes

Cooking Time: 20 minutes

Makes: About 200 grams

Ingredients:

Freshly washed, dried, deseeded cherries: 1 cup
Jam sugar: 0.5 cup
Lemon juice: 1 tbsp.

Method:

·        In a mixing bowl, mix the roughly chopped cherries and sugar. Set aside for at least 10 minutes

·        Gently crush the cherries. You may also put the entire mixture in the food processor and pulse for a few seconds. Or, you may divide the cherries mixture into two parts – make a smooth paste out of the first and leave the second, as is. The choice is entirely yours
·        In a deep saucepan, add the above and on a simmer, bring it to boil. Continue heating for another 10 minutes

·        Remove from heat. Let the mixture cool down
·        By now, it would have attained jammy texture
·        Cherry jam is ready to be spread over bread or be bottled!

Note:

·        You can replace jam sugar with normal sugar, if you do not have one
·        The amount of sugar can be varied, depending upon your taste and also on the type of cherries used. The cherries that I used were one of those sweet and sour varieties.

Cherry Jam stories:

During the season of berries, every shopping day attracts all kinds of fresh berries. Back home, the challenge is to consume them without letting them spoil or rot, considering the fact that berries have no more than 2 – 3 days of life! They are meant to be consumed freshly.

On one such Saturday, post our grocery shopping, a very kind neighbour of ours dropped by at our place to give us a bag full of freshly plucked cherries from her beautiful garden. We didn’t want them to go to waste. So, we ate them as much as we could, but there were quite a few still left. And then came an immediate suggestion from my daughter – why not jam them?

What followed next is right in front of you! I prepared about a bottle of jam and lol, it was over in no time!
