Homemade Strawberry Jam

Season of berries. Wherever you go in Europe, you will find some berry picking / plucking event happening. The very sight is so tempting that we get carried away by such events and end up plucking more and more of them!!! Is it the case with you as well? Well, that is how it was with us. We all love strawberries at home and more than half of what we plucked last weekend on a visit to a strawberry field, got over the same day! The freshness of the berries sour over the day and I didn’t want to keep them for more than 2 days. I tried to top it on breakfasts, but the stock was really more. That’s when my daughter, being the jammy girl that she is, suggested that we prepare jam.

It was a great idea and I did it.

This recipe goes with minimum ingredients, is easy and quick to prepare too.

Method:

  • In a bowl, mix the chopped strawberries and sugar. Keep aside for about 10 minutes

  • Gently mash the berries

  • Transfer the berries-sugar mixture in a pan and bring it to boil

  • Add lemon juice and mix well. Continue heating in low heat for another 10 minutes

  • By now, the mixture would have attained jammy texture. Take it off heat and let it cool for a few minutes

  • Transfer it to an air tight container and refrigerate

Relish with soft fresh bread or pancakes!!!

Note:

  • The jam stays fresh up to a month if refrigerated. But I am sure the jam will get over much earlier!!!
  • The sugar that I used is “Gelier Zukcer”  by Sudzucker. Otherwise called as Gelling sugar, it is a special variant of sugar used for the preparation of jam.

Strawberry stories:

With the onset of Spring, Germany became more beautiful than ever. Our routine walks through the nearby gardens and forests introduced us to new plants, trees and of course the berries. One among the forests lying right behind our house had lot of cherry and apple trees since the Spring began, which were waited with a bated breath by my daughter. Last weekend, we went to a strawberry picking event nearby which we all loved to the maximum. Our daughter squat through the whole time to eat the plucked strawberries!!! They were indeed very tempting and mouth-watering. The freshly picked strawberries were much tastier and fresher than the store purchased ones. We cherished them so much that, later in the night, we skipped our dinner too!!!
